I urge all of you creative designers, artists, etc.. to follow this link and sign the petition. It is a very important bill that should be opposed as it would change our ability to protect our artwork and other creative visual works... For a number of you, I know that your art is your bread and butter, so even more so, it is important to take a look and sign! here is an excerpt, with the link following..
The Orphan Works Act will affect all images from professional paintings to family snapshots. This includes any image, whether published or unpublished - or any that resides or ever resided on the internet. It will force me to register every image I make with privately-held commercial registries. All unregistered works will be exposed as potential orphans for commercial infringement...follow this link to protect your work!
Don't get me wrong. I let people post my stuff everywhere. I let them use my art from istockphoto everyday of the week, after all, I sell it all there as royalty free work! But if you have any kind of understanding of how inexpensive royalty free art/photos are then this might amaze you as much as it did me.
I received an anonymous comment on my other blog. An old post related to my Rocket Monkey. Someone was doing a search for Rocket Monkey and found this site (and related here)using my image. Ok no big deal, I sell the image. Here's the kicker. Its a design company, so they say..anyway. But then, why would they be dumb enough to 1. Use another designer's artwork illegally,
and 2. not remove or conceal this fact by covering up the water mark or removing it!?
I ask you all... what do you think? It just chaps my hide.. Not only do they steal my work, but they steal it without so much as to give credit where its due.
Hey again, I want to reiterate, I'm an artist. My stuff will get posted all over the place by people I always hope.. and I love that! What artist doesn't?! I only hate it when a poster claims it as their own or someone using it does so without paying or giving credit to where it belongs. This isn't just for me either. I see another artist's work being used this way and believe me I will do something about it too. :P
Ok that's my rant for the day!
Next one, I promise will be written by a happier Sandman. ;)
