Ok so my wife is a very talented artist and I've finally been able to convince her to put her awesome work on the web to give her stuff some exposure. I couldn't wait to give her portfolio a plug here on my vox..
I met my wife on the internet, and one of the things that caught my eye about her (besides her being a wonderful, lovely woman...) was her artwork that she'd shown me via email. I loved the fact that at the time she was in school for graphic design and that we had something in common in that area. Its been many years we've been married and she hasn't really found the time to do more art and get back into it until recently. This dragon is one of her first breaking back into the artsy world.
A little more background on this dragon and why its so great. First of all, Min had not been a pencil artist at all, in fact was very intimidated to working with them, but in spite of that, she tried it anyway, even picking an intimidating rendering of a dragon to work from. Well needless to say I about fell out of my chair looking at this thing! The drawing itself IMO stands alone as a well-done sketch but jeez louise, an early attempt at pencils? I say go, Melinda! I'm guessing you'll all agree too..
Check out more of her work via her Voodoo Chilli portfolio or BeHance.. Don't forget to give her votes for her work!
Well its like the commercial, only I wasn't taking a bath.. lol. Its what Adobe Illustrator does for me when I have a few hours to mess around with stuff. Not that this particular image took that long! Just what I ended up with lol. Anyway.. hope you like it, I dunno what I'll name him but I think I'm kinda liking the li'l (big?) dude.
I found this via DeviantArt.. I don't even know how.. but I thought it rocked..:D now it can rock my desktop...heh. its a huge dual screen wallpaper so know that before you download it. Download it here
This is a great example of something that truly inspires me and makes me want to get that pencil going. Awesome work by Sergey Safanov. You can read the post where I found this on ToysREvil's (Andy) blog
Great post Andy! :D Woot!
Toys R Evils got the connections man. He's always getting so many great posts from differnt companies and indiviuals. I'm a little jealous, but mostly thankful that someone is doing what he does over there.. because I benefit, as do his readers, I'm sure.
Anyway so the latest find is his posted interview with LeToy. Apparently they've had an open invitation to artists for entering their version of Le Toy's Logo - Parachute Boy. Well they are about to close out the entries, or should I ay were.. but have said they would leave it open for readers of Toys R Evil's readers til mid October! This is great news b/c this is definitely something I would b interested in! I love the concept, and design! Anyway.. check out the great interview. Visit the flickr album. Le Toy's site is in french but check it out anyway here. ;)
And lastly, here are some sample parachute boy entries I like:
Vektorjunkie.com is having a character design competition. The details as to all of the prizes are vague, but I did get out of the information that it would include being featured in the magazine. Even if there is no huge prize or anything sometimes being part of a competition is enough to get your "stuff out there" and exposed to the general public. So get on with it peeps! I know there are plenty of you on Vox here that do some serious ve(k)tor work so I wanna hear no excuses as I'm not going to give you mine (I'll just keep em to myself -- just kidding) (thanks to Liquidsheep for this coverage!)

Well here's my first attempts at working on an illustration (from an old sketch that's been sitting around) using the gradient mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator. I have to say first of all that once you get yourself to sit down and work with it, its not quite as daunting, but actually very powerful. It takes some finagling (sp?) when your working with oddly shapped bits, but after playing with it, I figured out how to get the nodes where I want them and everything to an extent. I'm still learning though and there is a bit of weird stuff that happens with it unexpectedly, but I'll tell ya right now, it may just change the way that I do some of my illustrations.. :D Let me know what ya'll think! Be gentle, its my first try :P
I recently changed my banner that a friend (nos4a2) from VTF shared on the forums that combines 2 of my favorite things in life (besides my wife and kids): Toys and Apple iPods. There was a reply on the thread that made me stop to think because although I disagree with the poster's response, it was an interesting point about branding. Is iPod's imagery, namely the ones like my banner, overused or is it a reflection of great branding? Think about that for a moment and remember, I'm no marketing, graphic advertising student, or professional in any real sense then read my thoughts.
In my humble opinion, I believe there is a fine line between overused and well-branded imagery, advertising. Today's marketing culture has lost something too because what I see, is a world where branding, images, mottos and ideas change far to quickly. People don't stop to think about how to build a brand. I believe that its important that your brand is instantly recognized. Far less important is how cool was your latest commercial, or ad, since that is all a passing fancy for the reader and TV watcher. Some of the greatest brands we know are things we recognize like the golden arches, Coca Cola lettering and red can, Chevrolet Bowtie, among so many other legacy brands.
Now the ipod dancing sillouhettes have been used a lot, but even without an ipod in the image, wouldn't you think apple ipod anyway? What do you think?
